Senior leaders in your field service organization might hear the term and think: “Are people going to be working less?” Technicians and middle managers hear the term and think: “Is that possible? It always seems like there’s more work.”

According to research from Towers Watson, though, work-life balance is the third biggest strategic advantage a company can employ — when it’s employed properly.

Think about it like this: let’s say one of your technicians is making $80,000 a year from your FSO. He is good, though, and a competitor comes along and wants to pay him $110,000 a year. That’s a $30,000 difference, which can be big for a family. But if you provide this technician flexibility and good management and don’t run him in circles on calls all week, he might really value the work-life split he has with you. Is that enough for him to turn down an additional $30,000 so that you don’t lose him to a competitor? It may very well be.

Work-life balance becomes confusing because of the different ways we conceptualize work — i.e. ‘work is virtue’ — but again, if done right, it’s a major strategic play for your FSO. Most FSOs we’ve ever worked with don’t necessarily do it right, however.
